It works the same way as an AHA, loosening the bonds between dead surface cells, but its molecule is much larger, so it can only work slowly and at the surface. That is the entire appeal: genuine chemical exfoliation for smoother-, brighter- looking skin with a fraction of the sting, which makes it the acid most likely to be tolerable on sensitive, reactive and rosacea-prone skin. As a large, surface-acting PHA it is well tolerated. A distinct substance — Lactobionic Acid (another PHA) and the AHAs are NOT synonyms.

Identity

Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) — the quiet third class of exfoliating acids beside the AHAs and BHA. It is the PHA you almost always find behind a "PHA" label: the most studied and most widely used of them. Chemically it is the lactone (ring form) of gluconic acid, and in water the two interconvert.

Its defining property is molecule size: PHA molecules are considerably larger than AHA molecules like glycolic, so they can't penetrate quickly or deeply and instead exfoliate slowly, right at the surface. That is what makes gluconolactone the gentlest exfoliating acid. It is a distinct substanceLactobionic Acid (another PHA) and the AHAs are not synonyms.

Mechanism (as proposed)

Gluconolactone is a keratolytic exfoliant that works the same basic way as an AHA — loosening the "glue" between dead surface cells so they shed and skin looks smoother and brighter. The difference is entirely about reach: because the molecule is large, it stays at the surface and works slowly, so it delivers real exfoliation with far less stinging, redness and barrier stress than the smaller acids. That is why it is singled out as one of the few chemical exfoliants gentle enough for sensitive, reactive and rosacea-prone skin.
