Identity
Mandelic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds. What sets it apart from its AHA cousins is size: at roughly 152 Da it is the largest common AHA — nearly twice the size of glycolic acid — so it diffuses through the skin's surface far more slowly and evenly. That slowness is the source of everything that makes it special: it is the gentlest chemical exfoliant, and, importantly, the one with the lowest risk of provoking dark marks in richer skin tones.
It is a distinct molecule. Glycolic and lactic acid are not synonyms of mandelic acid — they are separate AHAs with their own, faster, stronger profiles. The cosmetic material is typically the racemate (DL-mandelic acid).
Development & history
- Glycolic acid dominates the AHA conversation, but mandelic acid earned a place as the low-drama option — the AHA for people who found glycolic too harsh.
- Its most valuable, well-recognised property is the lower dark-mark risk for melanin-rich and reactive skin, where the irritation of faster acids can itself cause new pigmentation.
- It is used at roughly 5% (starter) up to ~10% (OTC), at night, always with daily sunscreen — because, like all AHAs, it increases sun sensitivity.
Mechanism (as proposed)
Mandelic acid works as a gentle keratolytic exfoliant: it loosens the bonds between dead surface cells so they shed, smoothing texture and lifting surface pigment — but because it penetrates slowly, it does so with far less of the tingle, redness, and barrier stress of smaller acids. Studies report improved skin viscoelasticity (a measure of texture) with topical use.
Its support for a more even, brighter-looking tone comes from two directions: the exfoliation lifts existing surface pigment, and — in the reference literature — it slows melanin production (via inhibition of the pigment-forming enzyme tyrosinase). That enzyme mechanism belongs to the reference layer and is described here as such; the cosmetic claim stays at the level of appearance — the look of brightness and even tone — never "inhibits tyrosinase" or "treats" pigmentation.
The standout benefit is a consequence of the gentleness: slow penetration means little irritation, and little irritation means a lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — the dark marks that harsher exfoliation can trigger in deeper skin tones. That makes mandelic acid the sensible first-line AHA for Fitzpatrick III–VI, sensitive, reactive, and rosacea-prone skin, and for anyone new to acids. Reference-layer mechanisms (mild antibacterial, comedolytic, sebum-reducing action relevant to congestion) are noted but not claimed: persistent acne or melasma is a dermatologist's remit, and this is a cosmetic entry about the look and feel of smoother, brighter skin.
