Identity
Lactic acid is the alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that sits between glycolic's strength and mandelic's mildness. At roughly 90 Da it is larger than glycolic (~76 Da), so it penetrates more slowly and more gently — which is exactly why it is so often recommended as a first acid and for drier, more sensitive skin.
It is a distinct molecule. Glycolic and mandelic acid are not synonyms of lactic acid, and its salt — Sodium Lactate — is a different substance (a buffering humectant, not the free exfoliating acid), so the two must not be treated as the same ingredient.
Development & history
- Lactic acid is one of the oldest cosmetic acids, historically linked to milk baths and now a mainstay of gentle chemical exfoliation.
- Its position in the family is defined by molecule size: bigger than glycolic, smaller than mandelic — milder than the first, a touch stronger than the second.
- Its stand-out trait is doing two jobs at once — exfoliating and hydrating — because it is also a component of the skin's own natural moisturising factor.
Mechanism (as proposed)
Lactic acid works as a keratolytic exfoliant: it loosens the bonds between dead surface cells so they shed, smoothing texture and lifting surface pigment for a brighter, more even look. Being larger than glycolic, it does this more slowly and with less irritation — gentler resurfacing, better tolerated by dry and reactive skin.
Its distinguishing extra is humectancy. Lactic acid is part of the skin's natural moisturising factor and draws water into the skin, so it hydrates as it exfoliates — the reason it suits skin that finds a pure acid too stripping. That "hydrates while it exfoliates" benefit is a genuine, allowed cosmetic point, kept at the level of feel and appearance. The deeper reference-layer framings — dermal renewal and pigment-enzyme effects — are noted but not claimed: "builds collagen", "inhibits tyrosinase" and "treats" any condition stay out. And like every AHA, lactic acid increases sun sensitivity, so daily sunscreen is essential to prevent burning and to protect the result.
