Identity
Panthenol is provitamin B5 — the alcohol analogue of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). The name holds the key: it is a provitamin, biologically inactive on its own, that the skin converts into active vitamin B5 after it is applied and absorbed. You will often see it labelled D-panthenol or dexpanthenol, which is the biologically active form good formulations use.
Why deliver the precursor rather than the vitamin itself? Because panthenol is more stable, penetrates skin better, and formulates more easily — a practical delivery form that becomes the real vitamin exactly where it is wanted. It is non-comedogenic and one of the most safety-reviewed ingredients in cosmetic formulation, which is why it appears in products for infants, sensitive skin, and post-procedure recovery.
An important scope note lives on this molecule: dexpanthenol also has a regulated medical life (wound-care and dermatitis medicines). That pharmaceutical use is real but out of scope here — this entry grades panthenol as the cosmetic ingredient.

On the surface, it is a humectant. It is hygroscopic — it attracts and binds water, drawing moisture into the stratum corneum and helping hold it there, filling the gaps between surface cells. The immediate result is skin that feels softer, more supple, and more comfortable, with reduced tightness. Human studies at cosmetic concentrations confirm measurable hydration gains.
Underneath, it is a metabolic contributor. Once converted to pantothenic acid, vitamin B5 becomes an essential part of Coenzyme A, the molecule at the centre of cellular metabolism. Through Coenzyme A, B5 feeds into fatty-acid synthesis — the machinery the skin uses to build the fatty acids and ceramides its barrier is made of. So panthenol does not merely sit on top adding water; it supplies metabolic support for the skin to make its own barrier lipids. Studies report reduced transepidermal water loss, consistent with improved barrier function.
Its reputation for comfort and recovery follows coherently from that barrier support: a better-functioning barrier loses less water and feels less reactive, so stressed or over-exfoliated skin feels calmer. The key framing for a cosmetic entry is that this is expressed as appearance and feel — hydration, comfort, a more resilient-feeling surface — and not as healing, treating dermatitis, or anti-inflammatory action.
