Cucumber on the eyes is the oldest image in skincare. Spa posters, films, your grandmother. And unusually for a folk remedy, it works: people lie down with two slices on their eyes and get up looking less swollen.
So the question seems settled, and the ingredient list seems justified. It is not, because the reason the slice works has almost nothing to do with the cucumber.
Three things happen during those fifteen minutes, and you can rank them by how much they contribute.
Cold. A chilled slice constricts the small blood vessels around the eye, and vasoconstriction is the main reason morning puffiness settles. This is the effect, and it is a property of temperature.
A compress. Something moist sitting flat against skin reduces evaporation and provides gentle physical pressure. Also generic.
Lying still with your eyes closed. Fifteen minutes horizontal, not squinting at a screen. Fluid that pooled overnight redistributes on its own.
A cold wet flannel does all three. So does a chilled spoon, and so would a slice of courgette. The cucumber is a convenient vehicle for cold water that happens to be sliceable and traditional.
That matters, because the slice built the reputation and the extract inherited it.
Follow the reputation into a product and watch both active mechanisms disappear.
A serum on your bathroom shelf is at room temperature, so there is no vasoconstriction. It is applied and absorbed rather than laid on as a compress, so there is no occlusion and no pressure. What remains is the plant chemistry itself, which was the smallest contributor in the original ritual.
This is why an eye cream promising the cucumber effect is making a promise about something the cucumber was not doing.
If reducing morning puffiness is your actual goal, the honest advice is unglamorous: apply something cold. Refrigerate the product, use a chilled metal applicator, use a cold flannel. Temperature is doing the work, so deliver temperature.
Now the fair part, because dismissing the ingredient entirely would be its own kind of sloppiness.
Stripped of the folklore, Cucumis sativus fruit extract is a gentle soothing and conditioning agent, roughly 95% water, carrying cucurbitacins, caffeic acid, a little vitamin C, flavonoids, amino acids and polysaccharides.
Our register grades three outcomes at [C], and each has a modest genuine basis.
Soothing and cooling the look of stressed skin. Cucurbitacins are triterpenoids that laboratory work links to inhibition of inflammatory enzymes, which gives a plausible biochemical basis beyond simple cooling.
Light surface hydration. The water content, plus amino acids, polysaccharides and a little natural lactic acid, produce an immediate fresh feel that suits toners, mists and essences.
Mild antioxidant support. From ascorbic acid, caffeic acid and flavonoids, and modest at these levels.
There is also an honest practical merit that never appears in marketing: it feels good in water-based formulas, lighter and less tacky than heavier humectants. In a toner, that is a real reason to choose it.
The C grades reflect where the evidence stands. The human data is thin, resting mostly on traditional use, laboratory work on the components, and one small uncontrolled pilot of a 3% cream in around 21 volunteers. Preliminary rather than established.
The confusion in this ingredient is worth naming precisely, because it recurs across botanical skincare.
The ritual works through cold and rest, mechanisms that have nothing to do with the plant.
The extract works modestly, through its own chemistry, and would work the same if it had never been associated with eye pads at all.
Both statements are true. What is not true is that the second inherits the evidence of the first. A cold cucumber and cucumber extract are not two doses of the same thing.

Cucumber extract is a pleasant, gentle, well-tolerated supporting ingredient carrying a reputation it did not earn and does not need.
In a toner or a light moisturiser it soothes, cools and lightly hydrates the look of skin, and it does so reliably. Pair it with panthenol for better-evidenced comfort, and with glycerin or hyaluronic acid for hydration that lasts, since cucumber's own is immediate and shallow.
Do not buy it expecting the eye-pad effect. That belonged to the temperature, and temperature is free.
The cucumber was never the active ingredient. It was the ice pack you could buy at a greengrocer.
Do cucumber slices actually reduce puffy eyes? Yes, and the mechanism is mostly temperature. Cold constricts the small vessels around the eye, a moist slice acts as a light compress, and lying still for fifteen minutes lets overnight fluid redistribute. A chilled spoon or a cold damp flannel produces the same result.
Does cucumber eye cream do the same thing? Not the depuffing part. At room temperature there is no vasoconstriction and no compress, so the two mechanisms that mattered are missing. What remains is the extract's own modest soothing and hydrating chemistry.
Is cucumber extract worth having in a product? As a supporting ingredient, yes. It is gentle, very well tolerated, pleasant in water-based formulas, and earns [C] grades for soothing, light hydration and mild antioxidant support. It is not a headline active and does not claim to be.

Is it safe for sensitive skin? It is derived from a common food, is very well tolerated, and has no notable topical safety concerns in normal cosmetic use, which makes it a reasonable choice for sensitive and reactive skin.
