Identity
Resveratrol is a stilbenoid — a plant polyphenol — found in grape skin, red wine and Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum), the main commercial source. In cosmetics it is used under the INCI name Resveratrol as an antioxidant. Its glucoside form, polydatin (piceid), is a related but distinct molecule sometimes used for better stability. Crucially, resveratrol's fame comes from the ingestible "longevity/SIRT1" story — which is largely cell, animal and supplement research and sits outside this register's topical scope. Mechanism (as proposed)
As a topical, resveratrol is a potent free-radical scavenger, and in cell studies it activates SIRT1 and other longevity-associated pathways. The antioxidant chemistry is genuine. Two honest qualifiers dominate. First, the SIRT1/longevity framing is mostly from cell, animal and ingestible research — reading it onto a serum is exactly the kind of borrowed-prestige claim this register flags. Second, resveratrol is chemically unstable (it oxidises and discolours) and penetrates skin variably, so delivery is a real problem, which is why it is often stabilised in oil-based or combination systems (and why the glucoside polydatin is sometimes used).
Reading the evidence honestly
There is real topical data — notably from combination "overnight antioxidant" serums (resveratrol with vitamins B and E) — for improved appearance of firmness, radiance and tone. But it is modest, often combination-based, and standalone controlled trials are limited, which holds the grade at C. The longevity claims stay out of the cosmetic scope: topical resveratrol is an antioxidant that supports the look of skin, not an anti-aging treatment or a "longevity activator," and it complements rather than replaces sunscreen.
