Identity
Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein (INCI; HWP) is not a single molecule but a mixture of wheat-derived peptides made by breaking wheat gluten into smaller fragments (molecular weight varies widely by process — the key safety variable). No single-molecule identifiers apply. It is used as a film-forming conditioner in skin and especially hair products.
The promise: protein for your skin
The pitch is intuitive: skin and hair are made of protein, here is protein you can apply, so it must strengthen and rebuild them. What HWP actually does you can genuinely feel — it forms a thin film over the surface, coating hair so strands feel smoother and look glossier, and binding a little water at the skin surface for a briefly plumper look. That is surface conditioning — a C-grade cosmetic-feel effect, temporary and pleasant. It is also where the honesty usually ends.
The word "repairs," and the film that isn't repair
"Repairs," "rebuilds," "strengthens from within," "plumps with protein like collagen" mistake a coating for a construction. A film of wheat peptides on a hair shaft is not new keratin woven into the shaft; a protein layer on skin is not new collagen laid down in the dermis. The molecule sits on top; it does not integrate, and the "strengthening" you feel is gone at the next wash. No controlled human trial shows topical HWP structurally rebuilding hair or firming skin — a textbook outcome substitution, firewalled at D.
Cha-no-shizuku: the soap that sensitised a nation
The most important part of this ingredient's record is not whether it works. Between 2004 and 2010 a Japanese facial soap, Cha-no-shizuku, containing an acid-hydrolyzed wheat gluten called Glupearl 19S, became extraordinarily popular. Then people began reacting — not stinging, but genuine immediate-type wheat allergy: swollen eyelids, hives, in some cases anaphylaxis, often triggered afterwards by eating wheat or by exercise. Over 2,000 people were formally documented; repeated washing had let the hydrolyzed peptides sensitise them through the skin and the delicate tissue around the eyes and nose. People who had eaten bread safely their whole lives were made allergic to wheat by a face soap. Japan formed a Special Committee for the Safety of Protein Hydrolysates in Cosmetics (2011); the danger tracked with large, acid-hydrolyzed peptides, and expert guidance now holds HWP acceptable only when processed to keep peptide size small (under roughly 3.3 kDa). This earns a D on safety — not because HWP is usually dangerous, but because it has a proven, marketing-hidden capacity to sensitise through the skin.
The test you can reuse
Two questions at once. For the benefit: does the protein integrate, or just coat? A film you can wash off is conditioning, not repair. And, rarer and sharper, for the safety: can this ingredient do something to me, not just for me? "Natural protein" tells you nothing about whether a molecule can sensitise — and this one's history proves the label's reassurance and the evidence can point opposite ways.
