Identity
Lysine (INCI: Lysine) and arginine (INCI: Arginine) are amino acids used in skincare as humectants and conditioning agents. Crucially, amino acids are the monomers — single units — whereas peptides are short chains of them, and it is the specific peptide sequences (not free amino acids) that carry the stronger "signalling" evidence. Free lysine and arginine are not peptides and should not be read as having peptide-level effects — see acetyl-heptapeptide-4 for the chain (peptide) class.

What they actually do
Amino acids are a real part of NMF, the mix of water-binding molecules in the stratum corneum (formed largely from filaggrin proteolysis; Maeno 2019) — so applied topically they can act as humectants, drawing and holding water, supporting hydration and a conditioned feel. That is the honest, evidenced role: a C — plausible and well-tolerated, but with limited outcome-specific data for the individual acids.
The firewall matters here more than usual. "Amino acids are what collagen is made of" is true dietarily and irrelevant topically — a building block eaten is not a building block synthesised into dermal collagen from a cream. "Boosts collagen / anti-ageing" is graded D, a classic outcome-substitution. Their real lane is hydration and conditioning, in the humectant family alongside hyaluronic acid and niacinamide — not the renewal family.
Development & history
- Amino acids appear across hydrating and "skin-identical" formulas, often as a blend, marketed on the NMF and (over-reached) collagen angles.
