Identity
This entry is about Centella asiatica extract — the whole-plant botanical, marketed as "cica," and also called gotu kola or tiger grass. It is deliberately not about the plant's isolated active molecules: the standardised triterpenes madecassoside, asiaticoside, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid are separate substances, each with its own (narrower) evidence base, and are not treated as synonyms of the extract here.
That distinction is the whole point of the entry. Centella is one of the genuine gems of the plant-extract world — a traditional wound herb that actually attracted serious research — but its "cica" branding has been diluted so far that many products wearing the name contain only a trace of the plant. So the label tells you little; what matters is how much real extract (and of what standardisation) is present.
Development & history
- Centella asiatica has centuries of use in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine, primarily for wound care — the folklore that gives "cica" its name (echoing cicatrisation, the medical term for wound healing).
- Unusually for a botanical, that reputation drew real scientific study: from the late 1990s, work on centella and its isolated compounds reported effects on healing models, collagen, and inflammation.
- "Cica" then went global as a K-beauty soothing category — and decoupled from dose. Cosmetic reviews note that widespread "cica" branding has diluted the term to the point where many products contain minimal actual centella.
Mechanism (as proposed)
Centella's effects are attributed to four well-characterised triterpenes: madecassoside (the most-cited anti-inflammatory isolate), asiaticoside (linked to collagen synthesis), and madecassic and asiatic acids. At the molecular level these isolates have been reported to engage relevant pathways — TGF-β/Smad (matrix synthesis) and suppression of NF-κB (inflammatory signalling) — with some antioxidant/photoprotective activity for madecassoside.
Here is the load-bearing caveat, and it defines this card: that mechanistic and clinical detail largely belongs to the isolated, standardised triterpenes — not to a generic "Centella Asiatica Extract" of variable composition. A standardised extract stating 40-70% total triterpenes, or a product naming "1% madecassoside," is a different, more defined material than an unquantified extract sitting low on an ingredient list. Reading the isolates' collagen and anti-inflammatory data onto the whole-plant extract is precisely the outcome-substitution this register exists to refuse.
So what does the extract honestly earn? At the extract level, the reliable, best-evidenced role is soothing and barrier comfort: helping sensitive, reactive, redness-prone skin look calmer and feel more comfortable, with supporting hydration and reduced water loss reported in sensitive-skin work. It is supportive, not corrective — it does not erase wrinkles, clear acne, fade pigmentation, or exfoliate. The standardised isolates (madecassoside and the others) are a separate, more specific story with their own, narrower evidence; the grade on this extract does not extend to them.
