Aloe Vera (INCI: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice) is the processed juice of the Aloe barbadensis leaf — a succulent whose reputation reads as automatically kind. It is a botanical mixture, not a single molecule, so no single-compound identifiers apply. Everything cautious about it starts with one fact: a single leaf contains two completely different substances.
One leaf, two completely different substances
The clear inner-leaf gel is the translucent centre — roughly 99% water, with polysaccharides (acemannan is the signature), glycoproteins, amino acids and zinc. That is the honest mechanism behind aloe's whole reputation: a light, water-heavy humectant film. Pleasant, soothing, real — and modest, which is its C.
The yellow outer-leaf latex, the bitter sap just under the rind, carries aloin and other anthraquinones. Hold onto this split: almost everything genuinely useful about aloe lives in the inner gel, and almost everything genuinely hazardous lives in the outer latex.
The claims the after-sun aisle is built on
Graded on appearance, aloe earns a fair, unspectacular C for soothing and a weak-but-real C for minor burns. Then come the claims that fail. "Heals sunburn" grades D — Mayo Clinic is blunt that there is not enough proof aloe helps sunburns heal, and a dermatology review finds no sunburn protection; the cool gel feels soothing, but feeling better is not healing faster. "Sun protection" is the one that can cause harm, so it sits at F: aloe is not sunscreen, has no meaningful SPF, and relying on it before sun exposure protects nothing. "Cure-all" grades D — the Natural Medicines database gives aloe no "effective" rating for anything.
The twist: is there even aloe in your aloe?
Here is what turns a tidy review into a detective story. In 2016, Bloomberg News commissioned a lab to test four store-brand aloe gels for aloe's three markers — acemannan, malic acid and glucose. In three of the four, all three markers were absent; the gels appeared to contain maltodextrin, a cheap sugar, despite aloe being listed first or second. The fairness half matters: the makers disputed the findings, and an industry chemist argued the NMR test can be unreliable on finished cosmetics. So the honest takeaway is not "your aloe is fake" — it is that you often cannot confirm from the front label what is in the jar. Buy on the ingredient list and source.
The safety line that actually matters
For the clear topical gel, safety is reassuring — Mayo considers it generally safe as used, the main watch-out being allergic contact dermatitis (stop if you get a rash); do not apply it to open, infected wounds. The part to genuinely respect is the yellow latex taken by mouth: as a plain warning, not a dose, Mayo Clinic reports roughly 1 gram a day of aloe latex for a few days can cause kidney damage and may be fatal. Topical inner gel and oral latex are two different things, and the risk lives with the latter — which is why "aloe detox" trends are a red flag.
The test you can reuse
Is this doing something measured — or carrying a reputation the evidence never earned?
