Tinosorb M (INCI methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol, generic name bisoctrizole) is a modern broad-spectrum UV filter and the sibling of Tinosorb S (bemotrizinol). It is unusual in being a hybrid filter: supplied as a microfine dispersion, it both absorbs UV like an organic filter and scatters it like a mineral one, covering the full 280-400 nm range with peaks near 305 and 360 nm. It is highly photostable — and, like bemotrizinol, it doubles as a photostabiliser for less stable filters such as avobenzone. Because it is a large molecule delivered as particles it penetrates skin minimally, and studies have not found estrogen or androgen receptor binding, so the endocrine questions attached to the older filters are not part of its profile. It earns an A on the same basis as zinc oxide and bemotrizinol — genuine broad-spectrum coverage from a single, photostable, low-absorption material. The one catch is regulatory: it is approved in the EU, UK and much of Asia (up to 5% in the EU/UK, 10% in Japan) but not approved in the US, the same gap its sibling bemotrizinol only cleared in June 2026.

Identity

Tinosorb M — INCI name methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol, generic name bisoctrizole, abbreviated MBBT — is a modern broad-spectrum UV filter developed by BASF (originally Ciba). It is the sibling of Tinosorb S (bemotrizinol) and, like it, a mainstay of European and UK sun care.

⚠️ The Tinosorb names are three different molecules. Tinosorb S is bemotrizinol (a triazine — its own card); Tinosorb M is bisoctrizole (this entry); Tinosorb A2B is tris-biphenyl triazine (not in the register). The near-identical trade names are the single most common source of confusion in this corner of the filter list — they are not interchangeable.

How it works

Bisoctrizole is a hybrid filter, which is what sets it apart. It is supplied not as a dissolved organic filter but as a microfine aqueous dispersion of particles, and it protects two ways at once: it absorbs ultraviolet energy the way an organic filter does, and it scatters it the way a mineral filter does. The result is genuine broad-spectrum coverage across roughly 280-400 nm, with absorption peaks near 305 nm (UVB) and 360 nm (long UVA).

Two further properties define it. It is highly photostable — it holds its absorbance under sun exposure — and it is itself a photostabiliser, absorbing the energy that would otherwise degrade less stable partners such as avobenzone. And because it is a large molecule delivered as particles (~2 µm), it penetrates skin very little and stays on the surface, which is also why the systemic-absorption and endocrine questions raised for the older filters do not attach to it — studies have not found binding to estrogen or androgen receptors.

Reading the evidence honestly

Why grade A. Genuine broad-spectrum coverage from a single material, high photostability, a useful stabilising role for other filters, minimal skin penetration, and no reported hormonal activity. This is the same basis on which zinc oxide and bemotrizinol earn their A — a filter that covers the full range alone, stably, without the absorption question. Bisoctrizole is, on the evidence, one of the best filters available.

What the grade does not claim. It does not make bisoctrizole necessary — well-formulated sunscreens without it protect perfectly well — and, like every filter, its real-world performance is governed by how much is applied and how often it is reapplied far more than by its presence. Note too that it is often included as much for its stabilising role as to be the headline filter, so "contains Tinosorb M" tells you the formula is built around photostable broad-spectrum protection, not the SPF number on its own.

The practical story is regulatory. Bisoctrizole has been standard in European, UK and Asian sunscreens for two decades while remaining unavailable in the United States, where it is not in the OTC monograph. That is the same gap its sibling bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S) only cleared in June 2026 — an absence of US approval, not an adverse finding. It is part of why American broad-spectrum formulation has leaned so heavily on avobenzone-plus-stabiliser systems.
