Identity
Succinic acid — also called butanedioic acid — is a small dicarboxylic acid (a short-chain four-carbon diacid) found naturally in amber (its old name is "spirit of amber"), in sugarcane, and in living organisms, including foods like broccoli and rhubarb. Notably, it is even made on your own skin: commensal bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis produce it during fermentation, which is part of why it's studied in the context of the skin microbiome.
In skincare it is used almost entirely as a topical blemish ingredient — serums, cleansers, and masks aimed at acne-prone skin. It is a distinct molecule from its salts and esters (disodium succinate, diethyl succinate), which are not synonyms.
Development & history
- Succinic acid is a recent "spot treatment" trend — the name sounds like an exfoliating acid and the marketing leans hard on acne-fighting, but the ingredient is better understood as a gentle, plausible extra than a proven active.
- Its safety is well established (the FDA recognises it as a safe substance); its efficacy for blemishes is the open question.
- Crucially, it is not an FDA-recognised OTC acne active — unlike salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and sulfur, which are.
Mechanism (as proposed)
The proposed mechanisms are mechanistically reasonable and mostly centre on acne: succinic acid may calm the look of a spot by modulating inflammatory signalling, may inhibit the growth of Cutibacterium acnes (its more-studied property), has antioxidant activity, and may help balance sebum. In professional settings it's occasionally used as a gentle superficial peel, but in a leave-on serum it is not acting as a strong exfoliant the way an AHA or BHA does.
Here is the honest part, and it defines this card. The evidence is limited and mostly early — observational or in-vitro rather than large clinical trials in people — and a 2026 peer-reviewed review put it plainly: succinic acid's proposed cosmetic benefits are only rarely supported by rigorous evidence. Combined with the fact that it is not an FDA-recognised acne active, that is why it is graded low here on purpose. Rating it up "because it's an acid", or letting a plausible anti-C. acnes mechanism become a "treats acne" claim, would be exactly the outcome-substitution this register exists to refuse. So succinic acid is presented for what the evidence supports: a gentle, well-tolerated, low-risk optional extra for the look of clearer, calmer skin — not a proven acne treatment, and no substitute for the actives that have the evidence behind them.
