Identity
Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE, branded Fernblock) is a polyphenol-rich extract of a tropical fern native to Central and South America, traditionally called calaguala or anapsos. Its actives are phenolic acids and polyphenols with potent antioxidant activity. It appears topically under the INCI name Polypodium Leucotomos Leaf Extract, and — importantly for reading its evidence — it is also one of the most studied oral photoprotection supplements (that oral use is outside this register's topical scope, but it dominates the literature).
Mechanism (as proposed)
PLE is a strong antioxidant that, in models, reduces UV-induced reactive oxygen species, DNA damage (thymine dimers) and inflammatory mediators — the trio behind photoageing and photodamage. That gives it a genuine photoprotective rationale: not by absorbing UV like a sunscreen filter, but by blunting the oxidative and inflammatory cascade UV sets off. The mechanism is well characterised and strong. As always with a botanical extract, the standardised branded material (Fernblock) has a defined composition, while generic "Polypodium extract" can vary — and evidence for one does not transfer to the other.
Reading the evidence honestly
PLE is better-researched than most photoprotective botanicals — real human data on raised minimal-erythema-dose, reduced UV-damage markers, and adjunct benefit in melasma and polymorphic light eruption. Two calibrations hold it at C. First, much of the strongest human evidence is ORAL, not topical, so it does not all count toward a skincare claim. Second, a large share of the literature is manufacturer-associated. Above all, it is an adjunct: it supports the skin's UV defence but never replaces sunscreen, and skin-cancer-prevention language stays out of the cosmetic claims.
