Identity
Pinus pinaster bark extract is a polyphenol-rich extract of French maritime pine bark, most familiar under the branded, standardised name Pycnogenol. Its active fraction is a mix of procyanidins (proanthocyanidins) and phenolic acids — potent plant antioxidants. It is used topically under the INCI name Pinus Pinaster Bark Extract, and it is also one of the most heavily marketed ingestible antioxidant supplements (that oral use sits outside this register's topical scope, but matters because much of its evidence is oral).
Mechanism (as proposed)
The procyanidins are strong radical scavengers, and the extract is reported to support nitric-oxide-mediated microcirculation and to influence MMP/collagen pathways in vitro — a broader antioxidant-plus-vascular profile than a simple free-radical quencher. The mechanism is well characterised and genuinely strong. The important qualifier is that this is a botanical extract, not a single molecule: the standardised branded material (Pycnogenol) has a defined composition, while generic "pine bark extract" can vary batch to batch, and evidence for one does not automatically transfer to the other.
Reading the evidence honestly
Pinus pinaster is better-researched than most single plant polyphenols in this register — it has actual human data on UV-erythema threshold, melasma appearance and skin elasticity/hydration. Two calibrations keep it honest at grade C rather than higher. First, much of the strongest human evidence is for the ORAL extract, not topical application, so it does not all count toward a skincare claim. Second, a large share of the literature is manufacturer-associated. As always, the measured outcomes are appearance and biomarkers, it complements rather than replaces sunscreen, and persistent pigmentation such as melasma is a dermatologist's domain.
