In brief

Inulin lauryl carbamate is an excellent, plant-derived emulsifier — it holds oil and water together and gives creams a light, non-sticky feel. Graded B for that real formulation job. But the "prebiotic, microbiome-balancing" benefits often attached to it belong to its parent molecule, plain inulin (chicory fibre) — not to this chemically modified emulsifier, whose lauryl chains make it a surfactant, not skin-microbe food (D). Identity

Inulin Lauryl Carbamate (INCI) is a chicory-inulin polysaccharide backbone grafted with lauryl (coconut-derived) chains — an amphiphilic polymeric emulsifier, not free inulin. Because it is a modified polymer, no single-molecule identifiers apply; a supplier CAS (478483-27-1) circulates but was not independently verified here, so it is not asserted. Sold as Inutec SP1 / SL1.

From gut-friendly fibre to oil-and-water fixer

Start with inulin: a soluble chicory fibre with a genuine reputation as a prebiotic — food for beneficial microbes — a reputation that carried into the skincare-microbiome trend. Now watch the chemistry. To turn inulin into a cosmetic emulsifier, chemists graft lauryl chains onto the backbone — fatty, oil-loving tails from coconut. The result is a different creature: an amphiphilic polymer with a water-loving inulin body and oil-loving arms, whose job is to sit at the oil-water boundary and hold emulsions together. And it is good at it — it wraps a hydrated film around oil droplets, makes them smaller and more stable, and keeps a formula light and non-tacky even when loaded with heavy oils, waxes or sunscreens. As a formulation ingredient it earns a clear B.

The halo that drifts across

Here is the substitution, and it hides in a shared name. Because the molecule is built from inulin, and inulin is a prebiotic, marketing quietly lets the prebiotic, microbiome-balancing story attach to the emulsifier: "prebiotic emulsifier," "feeds your skin's microbiome while it stabilises your cream." But grafting lauryl chains onto inulin to make an emulsifier is not the same as delivering free prebiotic fibre to your skin flora. The modified molecule's job — the reason it is in the formula — is emulsification; whether it still meaningfully feeds skin microbes at the small amounts used to stabilise a cream is simply not established for this ingredient. That borrowed benefit grades D, and the wider "hydrating, anti-ageing, microbiome-hydration" claims are the same move one step further — also D.

The test you can reuse

Is this molecule delivering the benefit its name implies — or has it been modified to do a different job, keeping the reputation of what it used to be?
