Identity
Lecithin (INCI) is a natural complex mixture of phospholipids, chiefly phosphatidylcholine — not a single molecule, which is why no single-molecule identifiers apply. It is amphiphilic (one end loves water, the other oil), which makes it both a natural emulsifier and a skin-compatible conditioning lipid.
The yolk, the Greek word, and the two meanings
In 1846 the French chemist Théodore Gobley isolated a soft, orange substance from egg yolk that let oil and water mix, and named it lecithin from the Greek lekithos, egg yolk; by 1874 he had its structure. Egg yolk was the only source for decades; from the 1930s soy — and later sunflower — took over. The ambiguity baked into the name matters for reading labels: to a food chemist "lecithin" is the natural complex mixture of phospholipids; to a biochemist it often means one pure molecule, phosphatidylcholine — a fundamental building block of every cell membrane. Marketing loves to swap the first meaning for the second.
What lecithin actually does, and does well
Its amphiphilic structure makes it a natural emulsifier — it parks at the oil-water boundary and holds creams together (its B, a formulation grade). Because its phospholipids resemble the lipids in your own skin barrier, it also conditions and softens — a real emollient benefit (another B), and it can support the look of a healthy barrier by supplying barrier-type lipids (a C: plausible, lightly evidenced; "supplies a barrier lipid" is not "repairs the barrier").
The delivery property that cuts both ways
Lecithin is a known penetration enhancer — it self-assembles into liposomes that carry other ingredients deeper. Formulators use this deliberately. But enhancing penetration is not, by itself, a skin benefit: the same mechanism that carries a helpful active deeper can carry an irritant or sensitiser deeper too. So its penetration role grades C — a tool, not an outcome.
The claim that borrows the biology
Phosphatidylcholine is a genuine component of cell membranes — true, and taught in every biology class. Marketing leaps: "rebuilds your skin cells," "cellular repair," "anti-ageing at the membrane level." Being a building block of membranes in the body is not evidence that a phospholipid spread on the surface rebuilds living cells; no controlled human appearance trial shows it. That story grades D.
