Identity
Glyceryl glucoside (INCI: Glyceryl Glucoside) is a naturally-occurring compound — glycerin linked to a glucose unit — found in some plants and marketed as an osmolyte humectant. Osmolytes are small molecules cells use to manage water balance and cope with osmotic stress; in skincare that translates to hydration plus a measure of resilience against dryness — the same logic that underpins ectoin.
It is the reaction product of glucose and glycerin, made synthetically or derived from plants, and is positioned as a slightly more sophisticated, "next-generation" take on a basic humectant.
What it actually does
Two layers. First, straightforward humectancy: like glycerin, it attracts and holds water in the upper skin. Second, the more interesting part — it is studied for upregulating aquaporins (AQP3), the tiny channels that shuttle water between skin cells, which may help distribute moisture more evenly rather than just sitting on the surface (Wilson 2012, in cultured keratinocytes and on human skin). That osmolyte behaviour is why it is grouped with "intelligent hydration" ingredients and earns its B for hydration and a C for the lighter barrier/resilience angle.
As with all these mechanisms, the aquaporin and osmoprotection actions stay in the reference layer; the cosmetic claim is hydration and comfort. It is not a renewal or anti-ageing active, and claims in that direction — collagen, repair, reversing ageing — are firewalled at D.
Development & history
- A plant- or fermentation-derived osmolyte humectant that gained traction as a "next-generation glycerin" with an aquaporin angle.
