In brief

Linoleic and linolenic acid are the two essential fatty acids — "essential" meaning the skin cannot make them, so they must come from diet or a bottle. Linoleic (an omega-6) is the important one for skin: a genuine structural brick of the barrier, built into the very ceramides that hold moisture in. Graded B for barrier support, with a specific, honest bonus — acne-prone skin tends to run low in linoleic acid, so topping it up can help congested-looking skin (a controlled study saw microcomedones shrink). Linolenic (omega-3) rides along as a soothing partner. Not a hero active, but a real, structural barrier ingredient — the difference between a lipid your skin is made of and a marketing extract. Linoleic is the headline: it is incorporated into ceramide 1 (EOS), a key barrier lipid, so it is not just sitting on the skin — it is part of the wall.

They appear in facial oils and barrier creams, usually as the active fraction of plant oils (safflower, sunflower, rosehip). Not to be confused with oleic acid, a non-essential fatty acid with a very different, more occlusive profile.

What they actually do

Two honest strengths. First, barrier structure: linoleic acid is literally built into the lipids that seal the skin, so supplementing it supports barrier function and the look of dry, compromised skin — the basis of its lead B. Second, the acne-prone angle: research documents that acne-prone skin often has lower linoleic acid in its sebum, and the sebum it does make is more clog-prone — so topical linoleic acid can help congested-looking skin without heaviness. A controlled study found microcomedones shrank by roughly a quarter over a month (Letawe 1998). Linolenic (omega-3) adds antioxidant/soothing support.

The barrier and sebum mechanisms stay in the reference layer; the cosmetic claim is appearance and feel. Treatment claims — acne, eczema, medical barrier repair — are firewalled at D: this is a structural lipid, not a drug.
