Identity
Acmella oleracea (also written Spilanthes acmella) is paracress, the "toothache plant," named for the tingling, numbing sensation its extract produces on the tongue and gums. That sensation is the clue to its cosmetic use: the responsible molecule is spilanthol, an N-alkylamide with real muscle-relaxant and local-anaesthetic activity. In cosmetics the extract is used under INCI names like Acmella Oleracea Extract and marketed, inevitably, as "natural Botox." (Oral-care and ingestible uses exist too — outside this register's topical scope.)
Mechanism (as proposed)
Unlike the synthetic "expression-line" peptides — whose whole problem is doubtful bioactivity at the skin — Acmella's active molecule genuinely has relevant pharmacology. Spilanthol is an established alkylamide with muscle-relaxant, local-anaesthetic and analgesic effects in models; the tingle it produces is a real neuromuscular action, not a marketing flourish. That makes it the most mechanistically credible member of the "plant Botox" category. The honest gaps sit one level up: a muscle-relaxant molecule in a model is not a demonstrated wrinkle outcome, and whether a cosmetic formulation delivers enough spilanthol to facial muscle through intact skin is the unproven step. Its mechanism is also entirely different from botulinum toxin — reversible, pharmacological, not the toxin's enzymatic cleavage.
Reading the evidence honestly
The cosmetic record is small and largely manufacturer-associated — dossiers for branded actives reporting a smoother look and reduced expression-line appearance. Independent replication is limited, which places it at D despite a genuinely bioactive molecule. The "works like Botox" claim is graded F: no head-to-head comparison exists, and the mechanism is fundamentally different. It is a lawful, well-tolerated cosmetic active; the constraint is the claim, not the sale. A real bioactive extract, honestly the strongest-mechanism member of a category built mostly on weak ones — but still appearance-level in what it can claim.
