Benzoyl peroxide

INCI · Benzoyl Peroxide

An oxidising active often used in blemish-prone routines.

More on this ingredient: read the guide.

What Benzoyl peroxide layers with
Retinoids (retinol)

Benzoyl peroxide can oxidise and deactivate many retinoids (adapalene is a noted exception). Keep them in separate routines rather than the same layer.

Avoid together
Copper peptides (GHK-Cu)

Benzoyl peroxide is a strong oxidiser, so it's commonly kept away from copper peptides in the same layer. Use them at different times of day if you use both.

Use with caution
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid)

Benzoyl peroxide can oxidise L-ascorbic acid, which may reduce its cosmetic benefit if layered together. Many keep them in separate routines.

Use with caution
AHAs (glycolic / lactic acid)

Two strong actives together can be drying or irritating for some; introduce slowly.

Use with caution
BHA (salicylic acid)

Both can be drying; many use them on alternate days rather than the same layer.

Use with caution
Niacinamide

Often paired; niacinamide can help the routine feel more comfortable.

Compatible
Ceramides

Benzoyl peroxide is among the more drying acne actives, and ceramide moisturisers are the usual way to make it tolerable. Formulators commonly advise the pairing; the ceramides are there to offset irritation, not to boost the treatment.
