AHK-Cu vs GHK-Cu: The Two Copper Peptides Everyone Mixes Up

Copper peptides come as a near-identical pair, and the internet can't keep them straight. GHK-Cu is the famous one - the skin peptide with the long research history. AHK-Cu is its lesser-known near-twin, and the single most-searched question about it is simply "AHK-Cu vs GHK-Cu" - people trying to work out whether they're the same thing, or which one they actually want.

They're not the same thing, and the difference is the whole point. So the useful question isn't "is AHK-Cu as good as GHK-Cu?" - it's "what was each one built to do?" Because one was made for your face, and the other for your scalp - and grading them on the wrong job is how the confusion starts.

The short version. AHK-Cu (Copper Tripeptide-3) is a synthetic copper peptide, almost identical to GHK-Cu but with one amino acid swapped - and unlike GHK-Cu, it doesn't occur naturally in the body. It was engineered for hair and scalp, where GHK-Cu is skin-focused, and the two are often paired in one "copper peptide" product. Its evidence is essentially a single lab study, so on our register it grades C for the lab-level follicle effect, D for an actual serum thickening hair in people, and F for "regrows hair" - which is a drug claim, not a cosmetic one. A gentle, hormone-neutral ingredient for the look of fuller hair, not a hair-loss treatment.

One amino acid apart

Structurally, AHK-Cu and GHK-Cu are almost the same molecule: a small copper-binding tripeptide. The difference is a single amino acid - AHK-Cu has alanine where GHK-Cu has glycine at the first position. That's it. One swap.

But two things follow from it. First, unlike GHK-Cu - which your body actually makes, and which has decades of skin research behind it - AHK-Cu doesn't occur naturally. It was deliberately engineered. Second, that engineering had a target: it was optimised for hair and scalp biology, while GHK-Cu earned its reputation on skin. Same copper-peptide family, two different job descriptions. That's why pairing them in one product is common - the marketing logic is "skin twin plus hair twin, multi-pathway copper."

The evidence is one study deep

Here's the honest part, and it's a big one. GHK-Cu's skin grade rests on a substantial body of work. AHK-Cu's rests on essentially one foundational study - Pyo and colleagues, 2007 - done in cultured follicles and dermal papilla cells in the lab.

That study is real, and its findings are genuine: in the dish, AHK-Cu stimulated follicle cells and looked biologically active. But a lab effect is not a clinical effect. There is no robust human trial showing that an AHK-Cu serum actually increases hair density on real heads - which is exactly why the lab outcome grades C while the "serum thickens hair in people" outcome grades D. One promising petri dish, and a marketed product leaning on it far harder than it can bear.

Where "looks fuller" quietly becomes "regrows"

This is the line that earns AHK-Cu its harshest grade, and it matters for the whole category. Growing hair and treating hair loss are medical claims - the territory of drugs like minoxidil and finasteride, held to drug-level proof. A cosmetic serum legally, and honestly, can only speak to appearance: hair that looks fuller, thicker, healthier.

When a copper-peptide serum slides from "fuller-looking" into "regrows hair" or "stops hair loss," it's not just overselling - it's making a drug claim it hasn't earned. On our register that claim grades F: not demonstrated for a cosmetic serum, and outside cosmetic scope to begin with.

To AHK-Cu's credit, it's well tolerated and hormone-neutral - no finasteride-style hormonal action, fine for any sex. As a gentle ingredient contributing to the look of fuller hair, it's reasonable. As a promised cure for balding, it's marketing outrunning the single study underneath it.

So which twin do you want?

Depends on the job. If it's skin you care about - firmness, the look of fine lines, post-blemish marks - the copper peptide with the evidence is GHK-Cu, and it's the one to read up on. If it's the look of fuller hair you're after, AHK-Cu is the hair-optimised twin, but calibrate to the evidence: one lab study, appearance-level claims, no miracle. And if a product pairs both, that's a reasonable formulation - just don't let the pairing imply double the proof. Each twin still has to earn its own grade.

The instinct worth keeping isn't "which copper peptide is stronger?" It's "which one was built for the thing I actually want, and has anyone shown it works there on real people?" For skin, that's GHK-Cu. For hair, AHK-Cu is the right twin - waiting on better proof.
