The oil on your face is made by cells that die to produce it. That's not a metaphor. Sebum — the "grease" people spend years and money trying to scrub away — comes from a genuinely strange process: oil-making cells fill themselves with lipids and then rupture completely, spilling their contents into the follicle. What reaches your skin is, quite literally, the remains of cells that gave their lives for it.
And here's the part the "oil is the enemy" mindset misses entirely: it's not waste. Sebum is a precisely built secretion that does real work — waterproofing, defending, and feeding your skin's microbiome. Understanding what it's for is the difference between managing oily skin and declaring war on it (and losing).
Sebum is your skin's own moisturiser and defence system, controlled mostly by hormones and genetics — not by how "clean" you are. The goal isn't to eliminate it; it's to manage excess without provoking more.
Sebum is a lipid-rich mixture produced by sebaceous glands — tiny glands found all over the skin except the palms and soles, clustered most densely on the face, scalp, chest, and back (which is exactly why those areas are the oiliest). Its main components:

Sebaceous glands use a process called holocrine secretion. Cells called sebocytes spend their lives synthesising and storing lipids, and then, at maturity, the entire cell disintegrates to release its contents. The oil is the dissolved cell. From there it travels up the hair follicle — the two together form the "pilosebaceous unit" — wicking along the hair shaft to spread across the surface as a thin protective film. Sebaceous glands supply the large majority of the lipids on your skin's surface.
None of that describes a substance you want gone. It describes a substance you want in the right amount.

What is sebum, exactly? It's the oily, waxy substance your sebaceous glands produce — a mix of triglycerides, wax esters, squalene, and free fatty acids — that coats the skin to retain moisture and defend against microbes. It's your skin's own natural oil.
Why is my skin so oily? Mostly hormones and genetics. Androgens like testosterone stimulate sebaceous glands (which is why oiliness starts at puberty), and your genes set how much oil you make and how sensitive your glands are — not how clean you keep your skin.
Is sebum the same as dirt? No. What feels like surface grease is sebum mixed with sweat, dead cells, and dust, but sebum itself is a functional, protective secretion, not grime.
Does washing more reduce oil? Not reliably — and it can make things worse. Over-washing with harsh cleansers strips protective lipids, can trigger rebound oil production, and damages the barrier. Gentle, consistent cleansing is more effective.
Does oily skin still need moisturiser? Yes. Oiliness is about sebum, not water content, and skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time. Stripping oil without replacing hydration worsens the cycle.
What's the link between sebum and squalane? Sebum is roughly 12% squalene, a lipid your skin makes naturally. Cosmetic squalane is the stable, refined version of that same molecule, which is why it's so well tolerated as a lightweight emollient.
