What Is Saccharide Isomerate? Everyone Says 72 Hours, and That Is the Clue

Read anything about Pentavitin and you will meet the same number. Seventy-two hours of hydration from a single application. It appears in brand copy, ingredient guides, dermatologist quotes and trade press, and it is always exactly seventy-two.

That consistency is worth noticing, because it is not what genuine consensus looks like.

When many independent groups measure the same property, the numbers scatter. Different protocols, different volunteers, different climates, and you end up with a range that people argue about. A figure that arrives identical from every direction has usually travelled from one source, and everyone downstream is quoting rather than confirming.

That does not make it wrong. It does change how you should read it, and it is a habit worth acquiring, because it works on every ingredient claim you will ever encounter.

What the ingredient actually is

Saccharide isomerate is a plant-derived carbohydrate complex built to resemble the sugars in the skin's own Natural Moisturizing Factor, the mixture of water-loving compounds the stratum corneum uses to hold moisture. It is made by isomerising plant glucose into a skin-identical blend of sugars, and sold mainly as Pentavitin.

Its distinguishing property is substantivity. Most humectants sit on the surface and leave with water or time. This one is proposed to bind to the free amino groups of keratin proteins in the skin surface, anchoring itself there and departing mainly through natural shedding of surface cells.

Our register grades the long-lasting hydration outcome [B], which is a good grade in this category. The B rather than A is precisely the provenance problem: a real, measurable and unusually durable effect, with much of the supporting data generated by the manufacturer and formulators rather than by independent trials.

The property that actually matters, and nobody leads with

The seventy-two hours is the headline. The interesting part is underneath it.

Conventional humectants work by attracting water from the atmosphere. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid pull moisture toward the skin surface, which works beautifully when there is moisture in the air to pull.

In genuinely dry conditions the logic weakens. Heated indoor air in winter, an aeroplane cabin, an arid climate: there is little atmospheric water available, and a humectant on the surface can end up drawing from the deeper skin instead of from the room. This is the well-known reason people sometimes find hyaluronic acid unhelpful, or actively uncomfortable, in dry environments.

Saccharide isomerate is proposed to sidestep this. Because it is anchored to keratin and holding water in place rather than reaching into the air for it, its performance should be far less dependent on ambient humidity.

If that holds, it is a genuinely useful and specific advantage, and it is a better reason to buy the ingredient than the number on the front of the box. It is also the claim with the least independent verification attached, which is a frustrating combination.

Reading the seventy-two hours honestly

Take the figure apart and it becomes usable rather than dubious.

It is a best case. A single application, under study conditions, at a defined concentration. Your product may contain considerably less, in a different base, on skin that behaves differently.

It is single-application. The measurement is how long one application persists, not a promise that you can moisturise every third day.

It is supplier-generated. Not falsified, and the company had the strongest reason to run the study nobody else was going to fund. But it has not been independently reproduced in peer-reviewed work, which is why our register holds the grade at B.

Rinse-off is different. Reported durability drops substantially in wash-off formats, which is worth knowing before paying a premium for it in a cleanser.

Our register lists "guarantees exactly 72 hours of hydration for everyone" among the claims this ingredient may not make. A single number stated as a promise is a different thing from a study result, and the difference is where most of the marketing lives.

What it does not do

The softer claims deserve the same discipline as the headline.

Barrier support is graded [C] and reads as downstream of good surface hydration rather than as an independent action. Soothing on dry or reactive skin is also [C], appearance-level, and largely formulator-reported.

And the boundary that matters most: this is a surface ingredient. It hydrates and holds water at the stratum corneum. Claims about penetrating to hydrate deep or living layers are on our forbidden list, and so is barrier repair in the medical sense. It is an unusually good humectant, not a treatment.

The honest verdict

Saccharide isomerate is a genuinely clever humectant with an unusually durable mechanism and an evidence base narrower than its ubiquity suggests.

It is gentle, well tolerated, suitable for sensitive and dry skin, and it does something that glycerin and hyaluronic acid do not: it stays anchored rather than depending on the humidity of the room. If you live somewhere dry, or spend winter in heated air, that is the specific reason to look for it, and it is a better reason than the headline number.

What it is not is proven to the standard the marketing implies. One supplier study repeated ten thousand times is still one supplier study, and the uniformity of that seventy-two across the entire internet is the tell rather than the proof.

Why is the grade B rather than A? Because of where the evidence comes from. The effect is real and distinctive, but a large share of the supporting data is generated by the ingredient's manufacturer and formulators rather than by independent peer-reviewed trials.
