What Is Melanin? The Pigment That Colours Your Skin — and Shields Your DNA

Here's a fact that upends how most people picture skin colour: everyone, from the palest to the deepest complexion, has almost exactly the same number of pigment-producing cells. The difference between skin tones isn't how many of these cells you have — it's how busy they are and which type of pigment they make. Once that clicks, a lot of skincare (and a lot of sun advice) starts to make more sense.

Those cells are melanocytes, and the pigment they make is melanin — the substance responsible for the colour of skin, hair, and eyes. But colour is a side effect of melanin's real job, which is protection. And understanding that job reframes something people chase every summer: the tan.

Melanin is your skin's built-in sunscreen — a pigment that absorbs UV and shields the DNA in your cells. Which means a tan isn't a glow of health. It's the visible evidence that your DNA took a hit.

How melanin is made

Melanocytes sit in the deepest layer of the epidermis. Inside them, in little packets called melanosomes, melanin is built through a process called melanogenesis. The rate-limiting step — the bottleneck that controls the whole thing — is an enzyme called tyrosinase, which converts the amino acid tyrosine into the precursors of melanin. (This is why so many "brightening" ingredients, from alpha-arbutin to kojic acid, work by slowing tyrosinase down: it's the master valve of pigment production.)

Once made, the pigment-filled melanosomes are handed off to surrounding keratinocytes — the ordinary skin cells that make up most of the epidermis — which position the pigment like a parasol over their own nucleus. Melanocytes manufacture the pigment; keratinocytes wear it, precisely to protect the genetic material inside.

Two pigments, not one

Everyone makes two kinds of melanin, and the ratio (plus the total amount) sets your colouring:

  • Eumelanin — brown to black. It's the main driver of how dark skin is, it's stable, and it's genuinely photoprotective: it absorbs and scatters UV and mops up free radicals.
  • Pheomelanin — red to yellow. It's behind red hair, rosy lips, and fair, freckle-prone skin. Crucially, it's a weaker shield — and under UVA it can actually generate reactive oxygen species, adding to oxidative stress rather than reducing it.

This is why the people whose skin tans least — those with more pheomelanin and less eumelanin — are precisely the ones who get the least natural UV protection and need the most from a bottle.

Why a tan is a stress signal

Tanning feels like your skin "handling" the sun. Mechanically, it's a wound response. UV damages the DNA in your skin cells; the damaged cells trigger a hormonal cascade that tells melanocytes to ramp up melanin and pass more of it to keratinocytes. The darkening you see is the aftermath of that damage and the emergency shielding that follows. There's no such thing as a "safe" tan from UV — the colour and the damage are two views of the same event.

The limit that matters

Melanin is a remarkable defence, but it's a partial one. Even the most eumelanin-rich skin doesn't block enough UV to make sun protection unnecessary — darker skin still sustains UV damage and still needs sunscreen. And the same machinery that protects you is what produces unwanted pigment when it overreacts: melasma, sun spots, and post-inflammatory marks are melanin in the wrong place or the wrong amount. Because pigment takes weeks to surface and fade (it rides the skin's roughly month-long renewal cycle), pigmentation is slow to shift — which is why the reliable approach pairs tyrosinase-slowing ingredients with daily sun protection.
