What Does the SPF Number Actually Mean? SPF 30 vs 50 vs 100

The number on your sunscreen is answering a question most people aren't asking. "SPF 50" gets read as "twice as strong as SPF 25" and "lasts me all day" — and both readings are wrong. The number is real and useful, but it measures something narrower than the marketing implies, and almost everything people infer from it is off.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. Technically it's a ratio: how much longer it takes UVB radiation to redden your skin with the sunscreen versus without it, measured under standardised lab conditions. So it's essentially a sunburn score — and that word, sunburn, is the first clue to what it leaves out.

SPF is a UVB-only score measured under ideal conditions you'll never replicate. Once you understand those two limits — what it measures and how it's tested — the "which number should I buy" question mostly answers itself.

The math nobody prints on the bottle

Here's the progression across common SPF levels, in terms of the UVB actually blocked:

No sunscreen blocks 100%. And look at the shape: going from SPF 15 to 30 roughly halves the UVB reaching your skin (7% down to 3%) — a real improvement. Going from 30 to 50 shaves off one percentage point. From 50 to 100, one more. The numbers feel like they should scale linearly, but they describe a curve of diminishing returns. The big win is getting to SPF 30; after that you're haggling over single points.

This is why dermatology bodies generally treat SPF 30 as the practical floor and SPF 50 as a sensible ceiling for everyday use — and why some countries cap the number that can appear on a label (Australia allows a maximum of "50+" even for products that test higher), on the logic that "SPF 110" implies a dramatic advantage that doesn't exist in percentage terms.

The word that changes everything: UVB only

SPF measures protection against UVB — the burning rays. It tells you nothing about UVA, the longer-wavelength radiation that penetrates more deeply, drives photoaging (fine lines, pigmentation, collagen breakdown), and contributes to skin-cancer risk independently. A high SPF with no UVA coverage is doing half the job.

UVA protection comes from a separate qualification: the "broad spectrum" label. That's the phrase to actually look for. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 protects you more completely than an SPF 100 that isn't broad spectrum — because the second one is only guarding against half the problem.

The reason your real SPF is lower than the label

This is the single most useful fact in this article. SPF ratings are generated in a lab using a specific, generous application: 2 mg of product per cm² of skin. Almost nobody applies that much. Studies consistently find people apply somewhere around a quarter to a half of the test amount — which means the effective SPF you're actually getting is substantially lower than the number on the bottle.

This flips the "diminishing returns" story slightly. On paper, SPF 50 is barely better than SPF 30. In practice, a higher number gives you a margin of error that partly compensates for the thin, uneven layer most people apply. That's the real, honest argument for SPF 50 — not that it blocks meaningfully more when applied perfectly, but that it cushions the fact that you won't apply it perfectly.

SPF is not a timer

A higher SPF does not let you go longer between applications. As dermatologists put it, a higher number gives more protection while it's on — but it doesn't stay on longer. The reapplication rule is the same whether the bottle says 15 or 100: roughly every two hours during sun exposure, and sooner after sweating, swimming, or towelling off.

There's even a behavioural catch. Research finds people using very high-SPF products tend to apply less, stay out longer, and reapply less — the false confidence of a big number producing worse real-world outcomes. An SPF 30 applied generously and reapplied beats an SPF 100 applied thinly once at breakfast.

What to actually do

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 (SPF 50 gives a useful buffer for the under-application everyone is guilty of), apply it generously, and reapply every couple of hours when you're out in the sun. The best number is the one on a product you'll actually wear and reapply — not the biggest one on the shelf.
