So one is a magnet, the other is a lid. Hyaluronic acid brings water in; squalane stops it getting out. That single distinction is the whole comparison — and it's why treating them as interchangeable rivals gets it backwards.
Here's the counterintuitive part that turns "just pick the hydrator" into genuinely bad advice for some people.
A humectant pulls water toward wherever it can find it. In humid air, that's fine — there's moisture in the environment to draw on. But in dry air — winter heating, arid climates, an aeroplane cabin — there's little moisture above the skin, so a humectant like hyaluronic acid can start pulling water from the one place that does have it: the deeper layers of your own skin. Applied alone, without anything to seal it, hyaluronic acid in dry conditions can leave skin feeling tighter and drier than before — the exact opposite of what you bought it for.
This is where the "rivalry" collapses completely, because the fix for hyaluronic acid's weakness is squalane. You apply the humectant to draw water in, then seal it with an emollient-occlusive so it can't evaporate away or get wicked out by dry air. If you genuinely have to choose one — budget, simplicity, a minimalist routine — the honest answer depends on your skin and your climate, not on which ingredient is "better."
Lean hyaluronic acid if: your skin feels dehydrated — tight, dull, looking for water rather than oil — and especially if you live somewhere humid or already use a moisturiser to seal on top. HA gives that plumped, dewy, smoothed-surface result that dehydrated skin is missing. Just don't use it alone in dry air with nothing over it.
Lean squalane if: your skin feels dry in the sense of rough, flaky, or lipid-poor, or you want a lightweight oil that won't clog pores. Because squalane mimics skin's own oil, it's unusually well tolerated even by oily and acne-prone skin that reacts to heavier plant oils — a rare "facial oil that suits oily skin" option. It softens and seals without a greasy finish.
Use both if: you can, because that's the combination the mechanisms are begging for — HA to pull water in, squalane to hold it there. For most people dealing with everyday dryness or dehydration, the two-step is more effective than a bigger dose of either alone.

What is well established is that topical hyaluronic acid measurably increases skin hydration in controlled trials — that part is grade-A evidence.
