Humectant vs Emollient vs Occlusive: The Three Jobs Every Moisturiser Does

"Hydrating." "Nourishing." "Barrier-repairing." "Locks in moisture." The language on moisturiser jars is endless — but the actual mechanisms are not. Almost every moisturising ingredient ever made does one of just three jobs, and it's grouped by that job, not by what it's made of. Learn the three, and the entire wall of products suddenly becomes readable.

Better still, the three aren't rivals you choose between. They're a relay team, and the order you apply them in changes the result — which is why one of the most common "hydration" mistakes is using the right ingredient the wrong way.

Humectants pull water in, emollients smooth the surface, occlusives seal everything shut. Most good moisturisers do all three — and a humectant with nothing to seal it can actually leave you drier than before.

1. Humectants — the water magnets

Humectants attract and bind water, drawing it into the skin's outer layer from the environment and from deeper down. They're the "hydration" workhorses: light, fast-absorbing, and well suited to oily, acne-prone, or combination skin and humid weather.

Examples: glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea, aloe vera, honey, glycols. They plump the surface (which softens fine lines temporarily), and some help shed dead cells on the way.

The catch is the important part. A humectant pulls water toward wherever it sits — and in dry air, with nothing sealing the surface, it can pull moisture out of the deeper skin and hand it to the atmosphere, leaving skin drier than when you started. Hyaluronic acid applied bare in a dry climate is the textbook example. Humectants need something over the top to hold what they've gathered.

2. Emollients — the gap-fillers

Emollients slot into the microscopic gaps between skin cells — the tiny cracks that are, in effect, small signs of a stressed barrier — and make the surface smooth, soft, and flexible. They don't actively pull in water, but they improve how skin feels and help it hold moisture, which makes them especially good for dry, irritated, sensitive, or barrier-compromised skin.

Examples: squalane, ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids, plant oils, shea and other butters, dimethicone, colloidal oatmeal. One caution: some emollient oils are comedogenic (coconut oil is the usual culprit), so acne-prone skin should favour non-comedogenic emollients like squalane.

3. Occlusives — the lids

Occlusives form a physical film on the surface that blocks evaporation — slowing transepidermal water loss — and shields skin from cold, wind, and other stressors. They feel heavier because they sit on top rather than absorbing. They're most valuable for very dry, compromised, or sensitised skin and in harsh climates, and are often used at night.

Examples: petrolatum (petroleum jelly), mineral oil, dimethicone, beeswax, lanolin. Petrolatum is the gold standard — it can cut water loss by up to around 99%. (The trade-off: heavy occlusives can trap heat and oil, so use them sparingly on congestion-prone areas.)

Why the order matters

Here's the insight that actually changes a routine: because a humectant needs sealing and an occlusive needs something to seal, the reliable sequence is humectant first, then emollient and/or occlusive on top. Draw water in, then trap it. That single principle is the mechanism behind slugging (an occlusive over damp skin), layering, and the "moisturising sandwich" — they're all the same three-job logic applied in order.

So which one do you need?

Usually, not one — a mix. You're really deciding how much of each your skin and climate call for: lean humectant with a light emollient for oily skin in humidity; all three, with a heavier occlusive, for dry or compromised skin in cold, dry air. Even oily skin benefits from an emollient when indoor heating or air-conditioning parches the air. The label's job words ("hydrating," "locking in") map cleanly onto these three functions once you know to look for them.
