Colostrum is having the kind of moment that starts in a gym bag and ends on a bathroom shelf. The first milk a cow produces after giving birth — thick, yellow, and genuinely remarkable for a newborn calf — has become one of the most-searched supplements on the internet, folded into smoothies, sold as "miracle milk," and now, increasingly, formulated into serums and creams promising plumper, glowier, younger-looking skin.
The pitch is seductive because the biology is real. Colostrum is packed with growth factors, immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, and cytokines — bioactive molecules that do meaningful work in an infant. The leap the marketing makes is that pouring those same molecules onto, or into, an adult must therefore rejuvenate skin.
But "the ingredients are impressive" and "the product works on your face" are two different claims, and colostrum is sold in two very different products that have to be judged separately. There's a cream you rub on, and a powder you swallow. They have different evidence, different problems, and — here's the part worth staying for — they fail in almost exactly the same way. This is an investigation into both.
Start with topical colostrum, because it has something most viral ingredients don't: an actual randomised controlled trial.
Fifty-two women, aged 40 to 70, were randomised into two groups — one applying a cream containing 15% lyophilised (freeze-dried) sheep colostrum, the other an identical placebo cream — for eight weeks, double-blind. Researchers measured hydration, transepidermal water loss, sebum, erythema, elasticity, and tone with standardised instruments. The colostrum group saw improvements. On its face, a point for colostrum.
But read the control arm, because this is exactly where honest reading earns its keep. The placebo cream — the one without colostrum — also improved skin hydration, just by a smaller, non-significant amount. That tells you something important: a good moisturising base does a lot of the work here on its own. The real question is never "did skin get better," it's "did skin get better because of the colostrum, beyond what the cream itself would do." One eight-week study on 52 people, however carefully run, can suggest an answer but can't settle it — especially when the vehicle is clearly pulling its weight.
There's also a mechanistic hint from the lab: a study on human fibroblasts found that liposomal bovine colostrum slowed the rate at which telomeres — a marker of cellular ageing — shortened over eight weeks, including under oxidative stress. Promising cell-culture biology. But note the word doing the heavy lifting: liposomal. Which brings us to the wall.
Here is the physics the marketing sails past, and it's the same physics that limits growth factors and EGF — colostrum's close cousins in the regenerative aisle.
The active parts of colostrum are large molecules. Growth factors, immunoglobulins, and lactoferrin are proteins — big ones. Your skin's outer barrier, the stratum corneum, is very good at keeping large molecules out; the rough threshold for a molecule that can passively diffuse through intact skin is around 500 daltons, and these proteins are many times over that line. So a colostrum cream faces the same awkward question EGF does: can the interesting ingredients even reach the living skin where they'd do anything, or do they mostly sit on the surface?
This is why that fibroblast study used a liposomal preparation — encapsulation is a delivery technology specifically for smuggling large molecules past the barrier. It's a tell. When the promising research leans on special delivery systems, it's quietly conceding that the plain version has a penetration problem. A colostrum cream that's just colostrum in a base may deliver a decent moisturiser and very little of the rejuvenating biology it's sold on — which, notice, is a perfectly good description of what that 52-person trial might actually have measured.
So the honest read on topical colostrum: a plausible, well-tolerated moisturising and barrier-supporting ingredient, with one real but small trial and a genuine delivery question hanging over its headline claims. Not redundant. Not proven anti-ageing either.
Now the version most people are actually buying: the supplement. The pill, the powder in the smoothie, the "colostrum glow" you're meant to drink your way to.
Here the investigation gets short, because the evidence does. The gut-skin axis is real — there's legitimate science linking digestive health to skin, and colostrum does have some evidence for gut and immune support (a meta-analysis of seven trials found modest reductions in upper respiratory symptoms, though even there researchers say there isn't enough to be sure). So a pathway exists: if a supplement improved your gut, and your gut affects your skin, skin might benefit downstream. Plausible. But plausible is not demonstrated, and downstream-of-downstream is a long chain to hang a beauty claim on.
On the direct question, the experts are blunt. A registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic, reviewing the trend, put it plainly: people online credit bovine colostrum with a fountain-of-youth quality for hair, skin, and nails — and there are no studies supporting that claim. A 2026 Cleveland Clinic review reached the same verdict: no studies support the fountain-of-youth claims. The institution's own headline on the supplement is not subtle — it advises skipping this pricey product.
Ingested colostrum for skin isn't backed by evidence that it does anything specific for your face. Any benefit is indirect, unproven, and routed through a gut-skin pathway that its makers rarely mention because it's a much less exciting story than "collagen from within."
Step back and the two lines converge on the same picture, which is the useful thing to take away.
Both products are built on the same genuinely impressive list of bioactive molecules. Both fail to prove they deliver those molecules to the place that would matter — the cream because large proteins struggle to cross intact skin, the supplement because swallowing them routes through digestion and, at best, an indirect gut-skin path with no direct evidence at the far end. In both cases the biology is real and the delivery of that biology to your skin is exactly what's unproven. The marketing sells you the ingredient list. The open question, every time, is whether any of it arrives.
That's not the same as "colostrum does nothing." A colostrum cream is very likely a fine moisturiser. Colostrum supplements may genuinely help some people's gut or immune resilience. But "good moisturiser" and "possibly helps your gut" are not what the anti-ageing marketing is selling, and the gap between what's demonstrated and what's promised is the whole story.
Strip away the "miracle milk" framing, and colostrum settles into a modest, specific place — with a clear split between its two forms.
Topical (cream): a plausible moisturising and barrier-supporting ingredient, with one small RCT that's suggestive but confounded by a placebo that also worked, and a real delivery question over its growth-factor claims. Reasonable to use if you like it; not a proven anti-ageing active, and not a reason to expect more than good hydration unless the formula seriously solves delivery.
Ingested (supplement): best evidence is for gut and immune support, not skin. For skin specifically, no direct evidence — any benefit is an indirect, unproven downstream effect. As an anti-ageing purchase, hard to justify on the current science.
For proven appearance-of-ageing results, the honest benchmark remains retinol — a small molecule that actually penetrates, with clinical evidence colostrum doesn't have. Colostrum sits alongside the other regenerative hopefuls — growth factors, exosomes, PDRN — as biologically interesting and clinically unproven.
Colostrum is a dairy product. If you have a milk allergy, both the cream and the supplement can trigger reactions — contact reactions on skin, or the usual allergic response if ingested. It's also, by definition, not vegan. Beyond that it's generally well-tolerated, but the allergy point is worth flagging because "natural" reads as "safe for everyone," and for a dairy derivative that isn't true.

For proven anti-ageing, retinol has clinical evidence and a molecular size that actually penetrates skin — neither of which colostrum can currently match.
Does drinking colostrum help your skin? Not by any demonstrated direct route.
